S2

Psy joins in questioning.
Incompetent.
Disregarded (scorned) by Doug.
Conflict evident between Det and Psy.
They seem to know each other already...

------------------------------------------

THE PSYCHIATRIST-

You are aware of everything, and yet you are not aware
You are listening with your subconscious mind, while your conscious mind is far away, and not listening.
Your conscious mind is far away, and not listening.
Your subconscious mind is awake, and listening, and hearing everything while your conscious mind remains very relaxed and peaceful.
You can relax peacefully because your subconscious mind is taking charge, and when this happens, you close your eyes and let your subconscious do all the listening.
Your subconscious mind knows, and because your subconscious mind knows, your conscious mind does not need to know and can stay asleep, and not mind while your subconscious mind stays wide awake.
You have much potential in your subconscious mind which you don't have in your conscious mind.
You can remember everything that has happened with you subconscious mind, but you cannot remember everything with your conscious mind.
You can forget so easily, and with forgetting certain things you can remember other things. Remembering what you need to remember, and forgetting what you can forget. It does not matter if you forget, you need not remember.
Your subconscious mind remembers everything that you need to know and you can let your subconscious mind listen and remember while your conscious mind sleeps and forgets. Keep your eyes closed, and listen with your subconscious mind, and when you're listening very, very carefully, your head can now "yes".
As you continue to listen to me, with your subconscious mind, your conscious mind sleeps deeper and deeper, and deeper, and deeper.
Let your conscious mind stay deeply asleep, and let your subconscious mind listen to me.'

DOUG-

'I'm sorry?!'

THE PSYCHIATRIST-

'Sorry for what?'

DOUG-

'Sorry I ever landed up in this place.
What I meant was, what the fuck are you going on about?!'

THE PSYCHIATRIST-

'I was hypnotising you.'

DOUG-

'I can assure you, you fucking weren't! ha ha ha
Do they actually pay you for this shit?!
I guess they- someone- must.
What about if I just pretend to be hypnostised?'

THE HYPNOTIST-

'It doesn't work like that-
hypnotism is a very serious subject, and shouldn't be toyed with.'

DOUG-

'I agree-
let's stop toying with this, and tell your pal the copper to come out from wherever he's hiding.
I've got nothing to tell you two, I've got nothing to hide.
And I can't think of any other options....'

----

 THE PSYCHIATRIST-

These techniques are concerned with reading signals from people, tiny unconscious clues that betray their thoughts. I tend to see it like a game...

THE DETECTIVE-

'Well, it's a game with very real penalties if we don't win-
so this stuff had better work better than the hypnosis,'

THE PSYCHIATRIST-

'It should do.
It's possible, and even quite common, for patients to be resistant to hypnosis and other therapies,
but it's impossible to resist certain unconscious impulses.'

THE DETECTIVE-

'We'll see.....'

THE PSYCHIATRIST-

'Have faith.'

THE DETECTIVE-

'In what?!
In you?
In the suspect?'

THE PSYCHIATRIST-

'In science'.

THE DETECTIVE-

'Hallowed be thy name....'

-----

THE PSYCHIATRIST WAS CONVINCED THAT THE FORCES OF MECHANICAL REASON,
OR STARK BEHAVIOURISM, WOULD WIN THROUGH IN THE END-
BREAK DOWN THE WALLS IN HIS SUBJECTS MIND, AND BUILD OTHERS IN THEIR PLACE...

THE DETECTIVE HAD LEARNED SOMETHING OF THE LIMITATIONS OF SCIENTIFIC THINKING,
THE LAST TIME HE HAD WORKED WITH THIS DAMN PSYCHIATRIST!

THAT HAD DEFINITELY LEFT A BITTER TASTE IN HIS MOUTH...

------

Science did the job in the end, broke down his 'resistance'.
Broke down his mind and his will and yet.....
The conscious (now only semi-conscious!) part of him was still unable to furnish any further information.

It was when some of the sub-personalities started to surface,
that things became 'curiouser and curiouser'...

  DOUG-

'We're all stumbling around together in this unformed world, whose rules and objectives are largely unknown, seemingly indecipherable or even possibly nonexistent, always on the verge of being killed by forces that we don't understand.

 DET-

'That sounds like hell of a game!'

DOUG-

'And it's a game everybody's already playing.

---

THE PSYCHIATRIST-

'Attention is like water.
We can create channels for it to flow down.'

THE DETECTIVE-

'And then what do you do with it?'

THE PSYCHIATRIST-

'We haven't figured that bit out yet...'

...

THE PSYCHIATRIST-

'We see what we focus on as if it were in a spotlight,
and everything else remains in darkness.

It's what's happening in the dark that interests me...'

THE DETECTIVE-

'And what is happening in the dark?'

THE PSYCHIATRIST-

'We don't know, because it's dark...'

-------------------------

THE PSYCHIATRIST-

'Our brain seeks meaning, and so it creates a seamless whole from our sense impressions, combined with and using our memories...'

 DOUG-

 'We turn everything into stories...?'

THE PSYCHIATRIST-

'Something like that.'

DOUG-

'Well go on, then...'

THE PSYCHIATRIST-

'I don't understand!?'

Doug-

'Tell me a story, that's what we're all here for!'

THE DETECTIVE-

'That's right, we're all here for a story- your story!
That's the only story any of us care about at the moment.
It's the only story in this whole fucking story, anyway.'

DOUG-

'I never heard someone say 'story' so many times before.
OK, I'll tell you a story about a story, within another...'

THE DETECTIVE THINKS HE'S CLEVER (A DANGEROUS TRAP WE ALL FALL INTO!),
AND READS WHAT HE NEEDS TO, SEES WHAT HE WANTS IN DOUG'S MANNER AND BODY LANGUAGE.
HE CONCLUDES THAT DOUG FEELS HOSTILE TO HIM, IS NERVOUS OF THE SITUATION AND IS TRYING TO DISSIMULATE AND HIDE HIS REAL THOUGHTS.
OBVIOUSLY, SIGNS OF GUILT.

HE DOESN'T REALISE THAT DOUG IS ALWAYS HOSTILE, NERVOUS AND TRYING TO HIDE THINGS!!!

AND MAYBE ALWAYS GUILTY...?!   LOL

-

THE DETECTIVE PRESSES THE INTERROGATION.

DOUG REPLIES-

'I can see that you are comfortable sitting there, relaxing in that chair, quietly confident, looking so comfortable as if you are ready to just let things go and relax while I talk about this and that and you know, you don't have to think, you don't have to listen to me or do anything really except relax and allow you mind to drift away like a small child snuggling comfortably down in a warm quiet place, slowing down, more at ease and more relaxed...'

AND FOR SOME REASON, THINKS THE DETECTIVE,
EVERYTHING SEEMS TO JUST BE......DRIFTING AWAY......!

---

Please enjoy the escape to your new reality.
